Description

Difficult to ascertain when work actually starts on rail development & accompanying archaeological observations; Law draws up plans from early 1850s but first records of observation appear to be from 1860s; however main rail development doesn't appear to take place until 1870s; site no.7460037 therefore used to record all archaeological finds made within this period of development; main survey of castle remains appears to have been made by Law in 1867 although published plan is clearly dated 1863; also this plan does not appear to tally with 1879 reports so there may be another plan; separate note refers to Law's plan of castle being held by Harold Frost of Guildhall Road Northampton; not clear whether this is original of published plan or possible missing plan; joint committee set up to systematically watch excavations on site of castle from 23/11/1878; Finds drawings are held in the Dryden Collection held at Northampton Library, while a plan of the Castle is held in a separate collection.
