Full Description

{1} The present road called Victoria Promenade was constructed during the C19th over the infilled medieval defensive ditch. Latest fill produced cira 18th century clay pipe.

{2} The Victoria Promenade was originally known as the Vigo Paradise Walk or the New Walk. It was made by the Corporation in 1783. Formerly lined by poplars but had been cut down by 1849 for safety reasons. At the same time the walk was extended towards the river and 'along the verge of the site of the old town wall as far as Cow-Lane, and planted with young lime trees'.
