Full Description

{1} The amount of pottery recovered by fieldwalking is relatively small when the extent of the cropmarks is considered. Fourteen sherds of Iron Age pottery were found in an extensive pattern across the ridge, with eight of them located on or near the cropmarks, perhaps implying an Iron Age origin. Only a thin scatter of early Roman pottery occurs across the linear complex, with a slight concentration of six sherds immediately to the west. A similar scatter was found to the north in the area of the other enclosures. It is uncertain if the evidence denotes further occupation or is merely part of a more extensive manure scatter. The settlement appears to have been abandoned by the mid Roman period, since there is a virtual absence of pottery around the cropmarks.
