Full Description
{1}Orangery built 1718 with ashlar facade with parapet;,{3}Orangery was built in 1718; probably by John Lumley; ashlar;,{4}Thomas 6th Earl of Westmorland had orangery built in 1718;,{5}Orangery now conservatory; built in 1718;,{6}6th Earl of Westmorland built orangery in 1718/19 on south side of west courtyard probably to designs by John Lumley; latter described as Earl's "overseer" at Apethorpe when employed at Emmanuel College Cambridge in 1719; freemason was John Dimbleby & joiner was Thomas Blowfield; in 1913 ground-floor passage was built against north wall & perhaps about this time internal first floor passage was constructed; in 1949 orangery was divided into 2 storeys & windows destroyed; south wall faced in ashlar; 9 bays with tall windows of which central one served as door; panelled parapet with small urns; stone-slated roof with broad central lead flat;
{9} Tree-ring analysis of timbers in the orangery. Ten of the samples retained complete sapwood, with felling dates of AD 1706, 1707, 1713, 1715 (x2), 1716 (x4) and 1724.
