Full Description

{1}Gardens have not retained much of their former character but 2 rows of yews leading southwards from south front are remains of ancient layout; gardens were being laid out in 1598;,

{3}C19th copy of early C18th plan of gardens shows double row of yew trees lining "walk ornamented with statues"; circular steps lead up to walk from bowling green; yews still survive;,

{5}2 lines of yew trees as parallel hedges with broad rectangular plot of grass between; once enclosure of some sort; hedges now grown wild & trees so tall that lower boughs removed giving shaded walks on inner side;,{6}View looking northwards up Yew Avenue with house in background;

{7} The southern half of the survey area contains a series of fifteen diffuse anomalies forming three lines. It would seem likely that these represent the positions of trees or shrubs originally planted along the inside of the yew tree walk.
