Full Description

{1} Field survey of 2.6km stretch of Watling St, from SP5796 7125 to SP5682 7339. Description and plan.

{6} Walk-over inspection of Watling Street between SP58007123 and SP56747351. Currently in good or very good condition with no major current sources of active damage.

{7} In 1957 a section was cut through the road agger by Brian Stanley. "This showed a very late road, poorly made, overlying the very hard-rammed gravel layers of the side roads of the main road system. The section was not completed due to crops lying over the main road. So far, the agger showing is not likely to be that of the Roman period. The Northamptonshire County Surveyor says that this stretch of road was abandoned during the C15th/C16th.
Photocopy of original note and section drawing in supplementary file.

{8} Romano British road shown as a well preserved 350m stretch of agger, now destroyed at south end (info: G. Foard). Field survey of road from SP568734 to SP578713 and plans

{9} Photographic survey and details of condition on 22/4/2012. From the rapid observations made, the impression is that the majority of this stretch of the old Watling Street in currently in good condition. However, some long term threats to the monument remains, the most serious being from encroaching vegetation.
