Full Description

{1} A parish boundary divides the site; there is no evidence to the north east of a hollow way.

{4} Plan.

{5} Relatively good condition; alleged 'Cotton Camp' Roman; OS quote ref 6; see RN9773010.

{7} In 1964 the site was described as being in very good condtion.

{8} Exposed stonework of some buildings was observed.

{9} Earthworks of Mallows Cotton DMV lie south-west of a hollow way 2m deep. 7 long crofts or closes are bounded by low banks, scarps and shallow ditches extending south west. At the north end of the site a small hollow way runs south-westwards. There are building platforms at the upper end of each close, some are bounded by the remains of stone walls. Large depressions at the north end of the site may be a manor house and farm. There is a large circular mound in the north east corner, which was cut by an excavation trench. 'A knot of small closes are the vestiges of a town'.

{10} Excavation was undertaken in 1909; medieval buildings including several round houses (possibly granaries) were revealed. Also a stone house with moulded door jambs and a church which had been destroyed by fire, with a silver coin on its floor. Excavation was undertaken by G.V. Charlton. The site was assumed to be a Roman camp. Finds included wall foundations, pieces of 6-sided stone pillars and a fragment of window tracery (open cusp); sketched.
