Full Description

{1}Iron Age settlement (SP 900 566) immediately W of Bozeat Grange, on Boulder Clay at 107 m. above OD. Air photographs (in NMR) show a number of circular features associated with a large D-shaped enclosure and some linear ditches. Excavations were carried out on the site between 1963 and 1967. The ditch of the large enclosure was sectioned and a ditch 3 m. wide and 2.7 m. deep was revealed. A trench inside this enclosure showed part of a hut-circle floored with cobbles. One
of the circular features was also partly examined; this had a surrounding ditch, 2.6 m. wide and 1.8 m. deep. Within it was a hut-circle 17 m. acorss. The pottery was of late Iron Age type. Earlier ditches were also discovered.

{5} Two ditched enclosures at SP 90015653 and SP 90065656 were excavated in 1964 and 1966 respectively. The former, hexagonal in shape, some 350ft across contained a hut circle. The second (see plan) was circular, 120 ft in diameter and also contained a hut circle, with an earlier ditch beneath, suggesting seasonal occupation. Pottery of Iron Age 'B' type was found in quantity over the whole area.

{6} Mr Hall said this occupation site is probably associated with the much larger area of IA activity immediately to the W (SP 85 NE 19,21,26). There is no surface evidence of the enclosures.

{7} No further information. The settlement is under the plough with no surface indications.

{8} Cropmarks of three enclosures.
