Summary

Investigation in the fields including Evenley Park immediately south of the small brook revealed large quantites of Roman pottery mainly 2nd century Samian but also including imitation Samian, 1st c sherds and late 2nd/3rd century coarse ware sherds. Though generally scattered they appeared in concentrations on slightly elevated ground together with tile (both plain, ridge and flue types), much stone, and apparent building debris. The few coins found are of Postumus, Gallienus, Constantine I, Constantius II and Valentinian I. Fragmentary bronze objects have also been found. This site, of some importance, was occupied throughout the 2nd and 3rd century, probably longer, with a reasonably substantial building standing for at least part of that time. No foundations have yet been found or excavated. Possibly the site of a Roman villa.

Full Description

{1} 1/4 gold stater reported found from the area where previously reported knife was found. Also a large quantity of Roman pottery identified at SP593359. The coin report from Northampton Museum dates the find to 55-45 BC.

{2} Gold quarter stater of Atrebaic type.

{2} Three Celtic coins: Dobunnic silver unit, VA 1042/1, bronze unit of Tasciovanus, VA1808-1, and previously unrecorded bronze unit of Cunobeline.

{4} Two coins of the Catuvellauni: Cunobelin AD 20-43 plated AR unit and a Dias/Rues 10 BC-AD 10 AE unit. Also a Romano-British copper alloy wheel brooch with eight spokes.

{5} Roman Military equipment object, very similar to small find No 2 in Northants Archaeol Vol 17 1982 pages 50-51. Found along with a Roman "hare and hound" folding knife.

{7} Thick scatter of Roman pottery and tiles. Also a bronze pin. The pottery ranges in date from the 2nd to the 4th centuries and includes Samian and colour coated ware.

{10} Mr Hollowell stated that the above finds were made during the clearing of Fox Covert, he confirmed the site and said that the material had recently been passed to Northampton Museum. The indicated Site is now under pasture/parkland and no surface finds were made.

{11-13} Investigation in the fields including Evenley Park immediately south of the small brook between SP 587363 and SP 594360 revealed large quantites of Roman pottery mainly 2nd century Samian but also including imitation Samian, 1st c sherds and late 2nd/3rd century coarse ware sherds. Though generally scattered they appeared in concentrations on slightly elevated ground together with tile (both plain, ridge and flue types), much stone, and apparent building debris. The few coins found are of Postumus, Gallienus, Constantine I, Constantius II and Valentinian I. Mr Green states that there is a Roman building at SP 593359 but gives no further evidence; though he found RB sherds at SP 587351. Fragmentary bronze objects have also been found. Isham and Woodcock conclude from these finds and the two coin hoards (SP 53 NE 3 & 6) that this site, of some importance, was occupied throughout the 2nd and 3rd century, probably longer, with a reasonably substantial building standing for at least part of that time. (No foundations have yet been found or excavated)

{14} NH 38 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa.
