Summary

Cropmarks of square enclosures were identified on mid-20th century aerial photographs and sherds of Roman pottery have been found in similar location. Geophysical survey has identified a complex of adjoining enclosures.

Full Description

{1} Cropmarks of square enclosures; fieldwalking recovered Romano-British colour-coated pottery sherds; Grey ware sherds found 1967.

{2} In farm kitchen garden (about 1/2 acre) south of village, 1966 and later about 30 small sherds of grey ware from a variety of vessels. No other Roman indications, but in 1969 six similar sherds thrown up by moles in an old pasture 100 yards east. Also on mole hills a small flint 'blade';

{3} SP 841664. Greyware (RB) sherds found in 1967.

{5} (SP 842664) Cropmarks of square enclosures

{6} This site is under pasture. Slight evidence of shrinkage seen adjacent to the village. No surface finds made. Moore's sherds are in Northampton Museum.

{7} Geophysical survey undertaken in 2023-4 has identified a complex of archaeological features covering an area of c142m by 70m which likely extend beyond the survey area to the south and west. The anomalies are almost certainly settlement featureslocated to the west of a south-east to north-west oriented trackway, 5.75m wide, and comprise irregularly-shaped enclosures, some of which have clear entrances. A number of probable pits are also present.
