Monument record 4985/0/1 - Iron Age enclosure

Iron Age boundary ditch found during the construction of the west Hunsbury Spine road. 2 Iron Age sherds were also found in the spoil. This feature is visible on aerial photographs. Part of the Hunsbury Hill Complex. [HER note 30/11/2012: sources hold contradictory grid references so both mapped]

{1} Enclosure/ boundary ditch seen during construction of West Hunsbury spine road. Its surviving width was c.1m and its fill mottled reddish-brown-red clay. Two Iron Age sherds were found in the fill. This feature is visible as a crop mark on aerial photos. SP733582

{2} Iron Age Ditch (?) (SP 73365852), on Northampton Sands, at 100 m. above OD. A short linear feature visible as a cropmark on air photographs (in NMR) was exposed during road works. It was about 1 m. wide and two sherds of Iron Age pottery were found in the fill. Ring ditches and (?) ditches are reported from nearby (c. SP 733587) on further air photographs.
