Summary

Archaeological evaluation identified evidence of medieval activity adjacent to the Swan Street frontage. The features, including a possible ditch and pit, dated to the late 11th-12th centuries. A later stone-built cellar was also noted.

Full Description

{1} Archaeological evaluation identified a small number of medieval features in a trench adjacent to the Swan Street frontage. A number of features cut into layers including a re-cut trench, shallow pit, possible posthole. All likely dated to between the late 11th and 12th centuries. There were none away from frontage within Trench D. The medieval features in Trench C were only 0.5m below recent material.

At north end of Trench C a stone-walled cellar was discovered; within Trench D no features or other signs of occupation prior to C19th were located;
