Full Description

{1} Phase 4 represented mainly by possible floor deposits and a robber trench dating to early C19th. Later stone footings of properties fronting onto The Riding. Two associated wells and a stone-lined pit to the south. This phase lasted from C19th and perhaps into C20th. An unstratified ?Victoria halfpenny was also found.

{2} Excavation in 1999 took in the same area as the 1981-2 excavation and extended the area westwards. In the early 19th century, activity included a cess pit, stone drain and building remains. Subsequently, the area was more fully developed with houses along the frontage. The stone footings identified previously were re-excavated and found to continue further to the west; the properties appeared to be part of a terrace. The stone foundations appeared to be unbonded and laid over a layer of sticky clay. They were found to continue c17m south of the frontage. The two wells recorded in the previous excavations may have been of an earlier phase.
