Full Description

{1} Group of Romano-British pits with associated coins, pottery etc revealed during archaeological watching brief. Trial excavation undertaken. Some of the pits were shallow, irregular scoops and may have been dug as quarries for the extraction of marl. They contained pottery dating to the mid-late 4th century. Two were more substantial and may have had a different purpose. They contained pottery dating to the second to late third centuries. The ditches appear to form part of a rectangular pattern perhaps aligned with the stream. One contained large quantities of limestone with tile and quernstone fragments in its upper fill. On stratigraphic grounds the ditches dated to the later fourth century, but contained a range of residual materials.
The presence of roof, box flue and floor tile suggest that a building may have been in close proximity. Relationship to villa which overlooks the site 750m to the east is uncertain.
