Building record 2659/4/1 - The Round House, School Lane

Circa 1600 'lock-up'. Probable 18th-century lock up. Limestone ashlar with stone roof with a circular plan.

{1} Lock up. Probably C18. Limestone ashlar with stone roof. Circular plan. Single storey. Studded plank door under stone lintel. Small vents with grilles. Conical roof with ball finial. Interior not inspected. The Round House is scheduled as an ancient monument.

{2} Scheduled 'Lock up' comprising of a circular stone building. Builidng has an 11ft external diameter possibly erected in 1600 on the village green. (Photograph).

{4} In 1712 Morton reports the existence there of a ‘fair new Market House ... by generous encouragement of the late Lord Hatton.' It was possibly erected about 1600 in connection with the Forest Laws.A lock-up still stands on the edge of the Green in Great Weldon, 11 ft. in outside diameter. In 1800 there was still a Wednesday market being held in the village but by 1849 it had failed and the market house had been pulled down.
