Full Description

{1}Trench in evaluation exposed the once-water-filled channel deduced from early maps from 1763. It is narrower than indicated by the early surveys (4m wide as opposed to 12m). Pottery from the basal silt, which accounts for some 40% of this content, indicates that it began to silt up no earlier than the 13th century, and possibly later. It was finally backfilled no earlier than the 19th century. Its function cannot be ascertained. The silt and mollusca show that it always contained water and may never have been cleaned out.
