Monument record 1160/3/36 - Medieval/Post Medieval Defensive Bank, north of Victoria Promenade

Archaeological excavation undertaken during the redevelopment of the former Girls School site identified a clay and earth bank in a trench adjacent to the south-east boundary of the site. The bank appears to be part of the inner defences and was dated to the 12th to 13th centuries. Later pottery and brick in the upper layers appears to suggest lter modification.

{1} The remains of a clay and earth bank which formed part of the medieval defences was excavated and recorded in section. Four soil samples taken from the bank were assessed. Small numbers of mollusca were present in all four samples, some indicate flowing water. The assemblages suggest that the bank is constructed with mixed terrestrial deposits and possible alluvial deposits.
