Abstract/Summary

The Oxford Archaeological Unit conducted a watching brief and limited open-area excavations during the construction of a new housing development at Derngate, Northampton in April-May 1997. the housing development was undertaken by Hassall Homes, who also funded the archaeological work. The main finds were a clay and earth bank which formed part of the medieval town defences, medieval quarry pits, medieval rubbish pits and possible structures represented by postholes, which may also have been of medieval date. A wall possibly associated with the post-medieval building known as 'the Towre', and post-medieval walls and soil horizons were also recorded. Environmental soil samples taken from the fills of the medieval rubbish pits contained a wide variety of plant and fruit remains, and also charcoal. This document assesses the results of the excavation in the light of other work carried out in the area of Derngate, and provides an updated project design for post-excavation analysis, research potential and publication of the data.
