Monument record 8588/0/1 - Undated Paved Area, Uncertain Function

{1} Area of limestone surfacing, not possible to define the area in plan as the area had been churned up with heavy vehicles in poor weather conditions. It could not be proven that the structure was linear and there was no dating evidence. Survival of 7 metre stretch of light brown sandy clay full of limestone pieces and fragments, south end relatively free of large pieces of stone whilst north had large irregular packed blocks and slabs (some of them dressed) up to 0.40m wide. Possible shallow cut ditch visible on the southern edge - possible roadside ditch, but not possible to see other side due to cut of pipe trench. The width of the structure, if taken as a whole, would make it an unlikely candidate for the Roman road, but if the northern side with the large slabs is considered to represent any possible road with the southern side representing wash-off debris and erosion, the interpretation becomes more plausible. Thought that this is not the case, though, and that this is part of a 19th century rubble patch/ charcoal area or some such area in the field.
