Full Description

{1} Lumley Arnold Esq. Lines of trees, but not enclosed. Also shown on second edition.

{2} Ashby Lodge is now demolished, but the former lodges stand. Date to mid C18th, built with an early C20th portico between. Still known as Ashby Gardens in 1988.

{6} Purchased in 1718 by George Arnold, who built the house in 1722. The grounds are tame and uninteresting, but enlivened by water of 25 acres. The Lordship comprises 1920 acres, its open fields being enclosed by Act of Parliament in 1764. Circa 510 acres of this belongs to G. Arnold, and chiefly comprised old enclosure.

{10} A description of the original farmhouse in 1612 suggests that it was laready surrounded by emparked enclosures. A new house was built in 1722 and a painting of c1760-65 shows the house surrounded by mature parkland. The First Edition ordnance survey map shows relict avenues approaching the lodge from the south and east across the parkland. A large lake to the north of the house still exists.

[SMR Note 05/01/2007: could this post medieval/modern landscape parkland incorporate the site/remains of the medieval deer park of Ashby Legers Mon 613?]
