Full Description
{1} Very shallow opencast pits. There was a quarry on this site by the time of the promulgation of the Easton Neston, Towcester, Roade and Olney Junction Railway, as shown on the desposited plans of 1878. It is not known whether they were worked for ore or building stone during this early period (and if the latter it could be an alternative site for the Shutlanger quarries). There is still a broad depression from the SMJ trackbed towards Round Plantation. On the south and east sides of Round Plantation the ironstone face is very well preserved, and the terminal point well-marked. Photograph on p.60.
[SMR Note: given ngr for quarry of SP725502 appears to be incorrect as too far south, but ngr for face okay.]
