Full Description

{1} A total of 1140 sherds of pottery was recovered from the site. In addition there are a considereable number of tiny sherds that have not been reported upon. The assemblage is of two main phases. The pottery found in the fill of the enclosure ditch dates to late Bronze Age/early Iron Age. Much of the pottery from the pits and quarries, found both within and around the enclosure, dates to the late Iron Age/early Roman period. A small number of medieval and post medieval sherds were recovered from the topsoil. There is no evidence of middle Iron Age on the site.
A total of 613 animal bones were found on the site. There were nine taxa of animal present ranging from horse to vole. The majority of the bones were identified as cattle. A bone pin was found from the middle fills of the enclosure ditch and is consequently very likely to be of late Bronze Age date.
There was a small collection of 88 struck flints but at best flint usage and discard at the time of the digging of the enclosure is minimal.
