Full Description

{1} Fieldnames: Parks & Sheep Pen Park.

{3} Deer Park (?), extends from area SP 635572 to SP 626568, it is first mentioned in 1326 when Gilbert de Middleton was granted the manor of Stowe 'with the park'. Its later history is unknow but Bridges records that in the late 17th century there were two contiguous parks, which by his time had 'been converted to other use'. He also notes that the area was formerly a warren. The exact extent of the park is unknown and the only traceable boundary features are not entirely convincing. There is no trace of any bank along the west and north parish boundaries. Along the north side of the Farthingstone Road, on the south side of Ramsden Corner Wood, there is a bank 5m wide and 0.5m high. A north facing scarp up to 2m high continues the line of the bank as far as Lodge Plantation.

{4} Adjoining park is 100a wood, now called the Heath, formerly a warren. earl of Danby - created by Charles I died 1643.
