Full Description
{1} Graffiti on top of wall near field gate on Wellingborough Road. Opposite the second entrance to the aerodrome, now called Lancaster Gate. This inscription was impressed into the new wet cement that had been placed on top of the wall in 1941. This part of the road was controlled by a sentry and a barrier as part of the airfield defences during the 2nd World War. There was a rectangular impression created by pressing a .303 rifle cartridge into the cement. Into this was inscribed G B 521 presumably the initial and 'last three' of the bored sentry. Next to this is the impression of a bayonette and under it the date 10th March 1941 and the name R. Moore. The final impression is of a clip of 5 .303 cartridges. Not easy to see, which is why it has probably survived.
