Full Description
{1} Archaeological evaluation, comprising a single L-shaped trench on the frontage of Chapel Road, identified a small number of medieval features. A group of three postholes were aligned at right angles to the frontage. They appear to be related as they form a short line about 2 metres long, but they cannot be stratigraphically associated with any other features. Two of the postholes contained pottery dated to the late medieval period. On the frontage, a hearth was located consisting of a sub-circular area of laid limestone, c.700mm in diameter. It contained a single flat hearthstone and was surrounded by a kerb of small blocks. The hearthstone was cracked from heat damage and the surrounding natural was scorched. The hearth contained two sherds of 13th - 15th century pottery. No associated feature had survived in the vicinity of the hearth.
To the west was half of a circular pit, thought to be broadly contemporary with the hearth because it contained Lyvedon Stanion 'B' Ware pottery. A large shallow oval pit was also identified. It appeared to have been truncated, perhaps as part of the remodelling of the slope. It contained only St Neots type ware and Stamford ware suggesting a late Saxon date or early medieval date.
Further north, away from the frontage, much of the archaeology appeared to have been truncated.
{2} A watching brief was undertaken during construction. A possible 13th/14th century pit was identified. The pit seems contemporary with the truncated structure found in the evaluation.
