Full Description

{1} C17th bellarmine sherds and fragments of brown-glazed wares found in profusion with clay tobacco-pipestems in the area enclosed by the north and west [?] arms of the Lyveden New Bield water-orchard banks and moats. Further inside the enclosure was much medieval building material, glazed ridge tiles and ordinary glazed and unglazed roof tiles. Also noted was some burned limestone rubble and a fair scatter of sherds, sandy in tenxture and with a noted absence of shell tempering. Two whetstones of southern-Norwegian origin and an iron spur were also found.

{2} In the area of the finds there was a medieval moat, so most probably the interior of this moat was occupied by a dwelling until work commenced on the garden.
