Full Description
{1}A watching brief was carried out by the Woodfields in the area of the Coach Station. It was originally thought (not by the Woodfields) that there would be very little there. This however was not the case as it was reported that there were 'kilns everywhere'. They dug one kiln as it was within a house where the building inspector was demanding radon traps which would have destroyed the kiln. It is thought that the other kilns were probably destroyed in the process of building works.
{2} At the site known as The Old Coach Yard, two definite kilns were identified. The first was fully excavated. The products of this kiln were, stylistically, of the medieval period. A further kiln, as well as a number of other features and a well associated with the pottery industry, was identified later on during the development, but a lack of an archaeological brief for the development meant that it could not be further investigated.
