Full Description

{1} Article discussing the Stowe Charter which records the gift by King Eadwig of an estate rated at five hides to his kinsman Brihthelm, Bishop elect of Wells. The article considers the topographical implications of the content of the charter.

{3} Rapid survey of the buildings within the village.

{4} Stowe is listed as a known Middle or Late Saxon minster.

{5} Settlement remains (centred SP 604 576 and 638 576), formerly part of Church Stowe, lie in two places, W. and S.W. of the church. The first site consists of inderterminate earthworks and a small pond, and the second of a long scarp 120m long and about 1m high running S.W.-N.E. with other low earthworks on either side. In 1773 the area was already devoid of buildings though the main scarp was the boundary between two long rectangular paddocks.

{6} First grid reference given by Auth {5} (SP 604 576) lies 3km W. of Church Stowe and is presumably an error. The description given by Auth {5} suggests a grid reference around SP 638 577.

{7} Plan of entrenchment at Stowe Heath, sketch of camp at Stowe Wood, drawing of fossil fish found at Stowe IX Churches;
