Monument record 2937 - Possible Prehistoric/Romano-British Settlement, south-east of Slattey Barn Farm

Please read our .

Summary

Cropmarks of probable Iron Age and/or Roman settlement including enclosures and a trackway have been identified from aerial photographs. Iron Age and Roman finds have also been identified. Archaeological observation of groundworks for new sports facilities at Spratton Hall School in 2018 found that earlier development had truncated any archaeological remains over an unknown area.

Full Description

{1} Spratton SP716706. Large sub-rectangular enclosure with droveway adjoining the north-west side.

{2} A trackway and enclosures lie immediately north of the village. Air photos show cropmarks covering some 6ha. A large roughly trapezoidal enclosure about 1.5ha in area is bounded on its north-west side by a length of ditched trackway (running from SP71507059 to SP71667076) and on the south by a group of smaller interlocked enclosures and ditches. Its western side is intersected by a further group of small enclosures. Two ring ditches are faintly visible in the interior at SP71637065.

{3} A series of enclosures just north of Spratton village. To the south of a broad ditched trackway running south-west to north-east is a large quadrilateral enclosure with somewhat curved sides of some 4.5 acres, containing in its north-west corner a straight-sided enclosure of c.0.5 acres. Attached to its west side is a small enclosure of 0.25 acres with an entrance gap in its west side, with a further enclosure of 0.5 acres just to the south.

{5} Archaeological observation during groundworks for a tennis court and pavilion at Spratton Hall School found no evidence of the archaeological remains; the landscaping, terracing and levelling work during earlier development of sports facilities has truncated the below-ground archaeological remains.
