Full Description

{1}Romano British site on a southern sloping plateau at the southern end of Brixworth. The north side of the field borders an area of development. Finds of grey ware, calcite gritted wares, Nene valley wares, samian ware and a little vessel glass. Together with one bronze 4th century coin; SP 743700;

{3} Geophysical survey suggested that there was an area of enclosed settlement, encompassing 1.5ha in the north-western part of the field. The enclosures are roughly aligned north-west to south-east, reflecting the curve of the top of the natural slope. The enclosures comprised four areas. Two of the enclosures were separated by a double ditch, possibly forming a trackway and the southern boundaries of the other two enclosures were also defined by double ditches. The trial trenching ascertained the presence of enclosure ditches and some internal features that were not visible on the geophysical survey. The pottery dates to the mid/late1st century AD. Several small-scale quarry pits appeared to post-date the enclosures, but may have been Roman in date.
