Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking in 1965 discovered a dark patch in the soil and Romano-British pot sherds.

{2} Earthworks identified from aerial photos (NCCAP:SP8555/14+16) as possible ditches. Features are indistinct but are possibly archaeological. Information: G. Foard (8/9/1982)

{3} Area of SP853554. Fieldwalking discovered dark soil, large stones, a saddle quern, and Iron Age and Romano-British pot sherds. Air photos taken in 1964 show a series of irregular cropmarks which might represent a series of overlapping and conjoined enclosures.

{4} Area of SP852557 1st century Roman coarse pottery and Samian, part of a quern, stone scatter found 1965.

{5} Saddle quern, probably Iron Age, found in March 1968 at SP 853555

{8} Iron Age and Roman Settlement, S.W. of the village, on Boulder Clay at 104m. above OD. Discoveries made over a number of years indicate an area of occupation covering six hectares. Finds and features include at SP 853554, a series of irregular cropmarks, visible on air photographs (in NMR), which may represent a series of overlapping and conjoined enclosures. These seem to be associated with an area of dark soil from which have come large stones, part of a saddle quern,a quantity of Iron Age pottery and a few Roman sherds.
