Summary

Cropmarks of conjoining sub-rectangular enclosures, ring ditches and possible boundary ditches were identified on aerial photographs during Northamptonshire NMP. Subsequent geophysical survey confirmed the presence of below-ground archaeological features although they were partially masked by the airfield runway. Trial trench excavation only identified an undated double ditch considered likely to be a post-medieval path.

Full Description

{2} Geophysical survey identified multiple positive anomalies including a sub rectangular enclosure c40mx60m around a circular enclosure with a c10m diameter. Several curvilinear and parallel linear anomalies were also identified.

{3} Trial trench excavation was undertaken across the former airfield. Several trenches targeted the features. Linear features and a small pit were identified. Aligned NW-SE, the ditches may be an extension of the ditch extending out from the enclosure and observed on cropmarks. No dating evidence was recovered. Interpreted as a pathway shown on the OS map.
