Summary

Cropmarks of conjoined enclosures and boundary ditches identified on aerial photographs. An extensive stone and Romano-British pottery scatter noted in 1968. Pottery included grey, colour coated and shelly wares. Two pieces of buff sandstone roofing tile, as found on other sites in this area were also picked up. Interpreted as the possible site of a Roman villa.

Full Description

{1} An extensive scatter of stone was found here in 1968, with Roman pottery and pieces of roofing tile. Two small black Roman urns, said to have been found in Orlingbury and now in NM, may have come from this site.

{3} Orlingbury SP 862728. Extensive stone and RB pottery scatter noted in 1968. Pottery included grey, colour coated and shelly wares. Two pieces of buff sandstone roofing tile, as found on other sites in this area were also picked up.

{4} Roman Urns. Deposited in Northants Museum. (Sited from small scale map to area SP 8672).

{5} Two black Romano-British urns found at Orlingbury are in Northants Museum.

{6} Northampton Museum have no closer siting information [for the Roman urns].

{7} Mr Fox confirmed the above site and stated that the finds in his possession were made from 1968 onwards. The site is under plough; no surface find made and no remains seen.

{8} NH 89 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa.
