Full Description

{1} Geophysical survey and trial trench excavation undertaken in 2005. The geophysical survey identified an area of rectilinear enclosures which was confirmed by trial trench excavation to be of 1st-2nd century AD Roman date covering an area of c3ha. Finds included rotary quern and mortar fragments, charred cereals and animal bones. The trial trench excavation also identified a less well-defined area of mid-late Iron Age settlement to the east which largely comprised curvilinear gullies (possibly round house gullies) and pits/postholes. This may have been an unenclosed settlement. The Iron Age features were not identified by the geophysical survey.
