Full Description

{1, 2} Fieldwalking in March 1993 recovered 2 struck flints and 2 sherds of Romano-British pottery. These were the only finds from this field.

{3} Archaeological geophysical survey identified 4 linear features and a possible rectangular enclosure.

{5} Subsequent trial trench excavation identified a small concentration of Roman features. In the central area of trench 10 were a complex sequence of shallow gullies, many of which contained sizeable quantities of Roman pottery. Other finds included an unidentified iron strip, a number of other iron objects, 2 bone pins, an intaglio and some nails.

Partly overlying the earliest gully was a thin layer of mid brown silty clay containing Roman pottery and bone, tentatively interpreted as a rudimentary surface or trample deposit. There were the remnants of two further features both of which survived as thin heavily truncated deposits with no clear edges. Their form and purpose is unknown. Ditches in trenches 10 and 11 probably form a small enclosure.
