Full Description
{1} Possible ornamental landscape possibly utilising Sibbertoft Castle as a romantic centrepiece with added C19th structures. A 'Rectory' is marked at the eastern end of the wooded area, but it is not certain whether the landscape was created for a rector, or whether as an 'extension' to the parkland for Marston Trussell Hall. There is no evidence of parkland shown on Eyres C18th mapping, Bryant's early C19th map, nor the early C19th OS surveyor's mapping. Possibly Victorian in origin.
{2} The presence of an avenue, exotic species, brick features etc hints at landscaping at some point in the past. It is speculated that this might be of late C19th origin perhaps in the form of a Victorian wilderness? The landscaping design presumably utilised or took inspiration from the presence of the steep sided slades as well as possibly the prominent vantage point of Sibbertoft castle motte.
{3} Article describing excursion to Marston Trussell area. Comments made about the gardens and parkland of Marston Trussell hall. "The gardens and grounds are perfectly charming. Nature and art have combined in such a way that instead of a certain crudeness we sometimes find where man tries to improve Nature, here all is in perfect harmony. We were fortunate in the time of our visit as the Rhododendrons, which form an important feature in the gardens, were in full bloom, and indeed presented a grand sight. Many other choice flowers, some very find peonies, especially added to the beauty of the scene. The trees in the grounds were especially fine; Elms, Limes, Wellingtonias, Scotch Firs and a great variety of other coniferae. Some of these trees forming very pretty avenues."
