Full Description
{1} Cropmarks recorded in 1979. Parts of possible enclosures lie on either side of a trackway. NCCAP: TL0378/004-7.
{2} Geophysical survey confirmed the presence of the large D-shpaed enclosure previously identified as a cropmark, but also identified a large rectilinear farmstead and surrounding field system overlying it. This is likely to be of Romano-British date.
{3} Following the geophysical survey, evaluation undertaken in 2023 identified a large, complex and highly dense area of archaeological remains. At least 46 features were identified and surveyed that included pits, ditches and potential occupation layers. Of the 46 features, 5 ditches were excavated. Fragments of animal bone, middle/late Romano-British pottery, an iron bar and a piece of possible slag were recovered. Also, there were a group of 10, largely substantial ditches and 2 pits were present in the south of the site. Fragments of animal bone and sherds of Late Iron Age/early Romano-British pottery were retrieved from these features. Fired clay, a fragment of copper alloy brooch or buckle, a quern stone and a fragment of human bone were also recovered.
{4} The site was considered for scheduling, but after examining all the records and other relevant information and having carefully considered the national importance of the site, it is considered that the criteria for scheduling are not fulfilled. This is a settlement of local and regional interest only and its interest should be managed locally.
