Full Description

{1} Features revealed during quarrying. Early Saxon burial ground 0.25 miles north-west of Brixworth church. Inhumations and cinerary urns were found, along with spearheads and knives. Fieldname: Lynch Field.

{3} Two distinct Anglo-Saxon cemeteries have been found north of Brixworth. This cemetery (Brixworth II) lies 1/4 mile NW of the church (c SP 744715). Inhumations and cinerary urns were found, with spearheads, knives, etc. The contents of the graves are now in Northants Museum.

{4} Field 3443 (approx field centre SP74347144) arable, recently drilled. This was the location for a Saxon cemetery discovered during 19th century ironstone excavation. Quarry edge scarp clearly evident along southern boundary. Quarry limit probably largely as recorded by SMR, leaving only western end unexcavated. The indications are that the western part of the field remains unquarried though on present evidence there is no indication that the cemetery extended within this area. Archaeological management advice as for fields 7055 and 5943 above. The same applies to field 3459 (approx field centre SP74327160), again partly quarried but this time under pasture. Retention of the existing pasture would help safeguard any buried remains that may survive within this field; earthwork traces of a former ironstone tramway are also believed to be present.

{5} The indicated site falls within an area of reclaimed ironstone mining now under allotments and plough. Local enquiries revealed no knowledge of recent finds. No siting information at Northampton Museum.
