Abstract/Summary

Site visit 19th September 2002 to meet Allan Godber of FWAG and the landowner, Mr Mallard of Home Farm, Brixworth (tel 01604 880622) regarding a 2002 CSS (29/128/0065) application – in particular the value of reversion on the northernmost fields and the conservation recommended in and around the partly quarried fields, where the SMR records Saxon cemeteries, Roman villa and other settlement remains. HET currently uncertain as to extent of survival of latter. Need to establish current survival. Visit involved rapid walk-over inspection of 8 fields. Followed up on 1st October of a visit to the field containing the villa with the two co-directors of the late 1960s excavations, Mr Peter Woods (tel 01933 665938) and Mr Roy Turland. Mr Mallard was farming here when the excavations were conducted in 1960s by Peter J Woods with Roy Turland for Brixworth Archaeological Research Group. Whilst reports have been published by Woods these have not to date included the structures. Plan of villa in Woods’ part 1 report on the pottery but is ‘floating’. Priority must be to encourage writing up of earlier excavations on this important site.
