Possible site of a deserted medieval settlement, documents mention mills and a wharf; no visible remains. Also known as Crowthorp, Crowethorpe, Crouthorpe, Crawethorp, Crowethorpbrigge, Crowethorp, Cruthorp juxta Undele. Sites of 12th-13th century buildings.

Full Description

{1} Crowethorpe in C12th & C13th; Crouthorpe in 1267; Crawethorp in 1274; Crowethorpbrigge in 1312; pontem de Crowethorp in 1330; Cruthorp juxta Undele also in 1330; last mentioned in 1336 when called Crowthorp. It was near to Oundle South Bridge (as recorded in 1312).

{2} Crowthorp DMV; the site is lost, but it was near South Bridge, Oundle (TL03728780). It was last mentioned in documents of 1336.

{4} It is an unlikely site for a settlement, although there are records from the C12th of the lost Crowthorpe in the vicinity.

{5} The remains of the 12th-13th cent buildings TL 08 NW 39 may have formed part of the village, but no evidence for desertion was seen in the area.

{6} Crowthorpe Closes are shown at c.TL036873 on a map of 1716 AD.

{7} South Bridge, Oundle, is also called Crowthorpe Bridge. There were "important mills" at Crowthorpe.

{8} A stone building with tile roof, possibly post medieval or modern;

{10} Oundle TL 038876. Remains have been investigated of completely destroyed dwellings of the late 12th and 13th centuries, only ditches remaining.

{11} The remains of the 12th-13th cent buildings TL 08 NW 39 may have formed part of the village, but no evidence for desertion was seen in the area.
