Abstract/Summary
A desk-based archaeological assessment has been carried out for a proposed development site including the Grosvenor Shopping Centre and the present bus station at Northampton. Examination of historic maps indicates that the area falls within the historic medieval walled town and includes the site of the former Greyfriars Friary. The south-western corner of the redevelopment area just clips the north-eastern corner of the postulated defensive circuit of the Saxon burh. During the Victorian period there was extensive disturbance by cellars and the extensive redevelopment in the latter half of the 20th century has removed the majority of any archaeological deposits. It is therefore thought unlikely that any extensive areas of medieval or earlier deposits survive beneath the present bus station, but small areas of intact archaeological deposits may be present.
