Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation comprising of a fieldwalking survey and trial excavation was carried out on land at Sandy Hills Farm, Rothwell, Northamptonshire (NGR: SP 792799). Fieldwalking was restricted to the middle and southern areas as the northern part of the site was unwalkable. The survey found a light scatter of flints which may have been worked or could have been plough damaged as well as five medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds dispersed probably representing manure scatters. The trial excavation took place over known cropmarks consisting of a possible sub-rectangular enclosure as well as parallel linear marks and irregular features on the northern part of the field. Only the possible sub-rectangular enclosure was found and consisted of two ditches which could represent its northern and eastern sides. These were both about 3m wide and were partially excavated. No internal features were found but outside a possible shallow pit could represent infilling of a natural hollow. This enclosure seems to have been dated to the Iron Age by two small sherds.
