Abstract/Summary

A full account and plan accompanies. What appears to be a medieval defensive enclosure at the eastern tip of the ridge on which Castle Close is situated; A bank dividing two types of ridge and furrow appears to be a defensive bank, demarcating the west side. These may have been an outside ditch. The north and east boundaries are an escarpment up to two metres high. South side under Irthlingborough Road. Area c.120x65metres. Part of enclosure on north has been reduced in height in modern times, in centre of which is a bandstand. The enclosure is about 100-120 metres east of Castle Close. (1838 Bevan's Field Name Plan).
