Abstract/Summary

In mid August 2000 a water main was excavated across the site of the Croughton Roman settlement, without the required consent. Following an approach to CAS by Glyn Coppack of the East Midlands Region of English Heritage, a small CFA team was deployed in order to evaluate the scale of damage to the monument. Six segments of the course of pipe trench were re-excavated, the sections were cleaned, and the archaeology revealed in the sections were recorded. All sections contained archaeological deposits, some showing complex sequences and the presence of structures. The overall conclusion was that considerable damage had been caused to complex archaeological deposits.
