Abstract/Summary
Pre 18th century road remains, and earlier settlement remains. A road dating from the early 18th century appears to have been built partly overlapping the reduced remains of an earlier road of more substantial construction, on a slightly different alignment. Further clues as to the dating of the earlier road can be ascertained from associated ridge-and-furrow patterns. Various remains appear to have been overlain by this older road, and are by implication medieval or earlier, some possibly iron age. They include an area of hollows and other remains previously published by T. C. Welsh in Northamptonshire Archaeology Vol 25 (1993/4) p189, then interpreted as industrial. On the north and south margins of this area the road overlies two curved earthwork fragments, one comprising a scarp, ditch and couterscarp bank. In addition what may have been an elliptical enclosure formed by a 6 metre broad bank, long axis symmetrical to the road, 160 by 80 metres approximately, appears to be earlier or contemporary. A detailed report has been submitted to the SMR describing the features in relation to a sketchplan.
