Abstract/Summary
Field barn with integral accommodation. Located on top of Vengence Hill (as named on 19th century OS plan). One of 4 farm buildings located on the hill by late 19/20th century; only 2 now survive. Complex is present on 1st edition OS map. Largely constructed of brick with limited stonework, all under rusting corrugated iron roofing. The complex is broadly ‘n’ shaped in plan, comprising a single E x W aligned barn and living accommodation under one roof. Accommodation is at East end of this main range and is of two storeys; small open cooking range present with small brick chimney. Door to accommodation is in East elevation with blocked door in north elevation. Shepherd/stonemark home or seasonal workers house. Adjoining south side of barn/ accommodation is a small courtyard made up of 2 north x south aligned brick animal shelters open to the intervening yard. A simple timber and tin roofed hay barn occupies the south end of the yard along with a fieldgate access. The overall plan form with integral barn accommodation us rare in Northamptonshire. The complex is derelict and decaying but nevertheless in very good condition. Clearly of greatest risk from neglect. Guesstimated date - mid 19th century.
