Abstract/Summary
A watching brief was carried out during the replacement of a water pipe at Whilton Lodge Farm. The trench was 250mm wide and was excavated to a depth of 1.10m by a drainage machine except the last 16m, which was excavated using a JCB 3CX excavator. A simple stratification of topsoil varying in depth between 0.10m and 0.15m thick was revealed, consisting of a dark brown silty clay loam overlying a subsoil of a light/medium yellow brown silty clay with gravel inclusions. No significant archaeological remains were observed during the groundworks.
