Abstract/Summary

An evaluation comprising desk-based assessment and trial trenching, suggested that building remains associated with the former Augustinian Friary survived within the former Burgess Site at St Peters Way, Northampton. Consequently, archaeological recording was undertaken in advance of construction of a sunken loading ramp associated with a proposed food store. The robbed out remains of at least two phases of stone buildings, including a vaulted stone drain, were uncovered. Finds from the demolition layers above the buildings , including a 'sauce' bottle, a fragment of aquamanile and a carved bone knife are consistent with the sites monastic status. Ceramic floor tiles and roof tiles had been re-used in a later system of drains, and medieval window glass and architectural fragments were recovered from the rubble layers. It has not been possible to identify any form or function for fragmentary robbed-out structural remains. It is therefore suggested that the ananlytical potential of the structural and material assemblage is limited.
