Abstract/Summary

This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology Service on the site of the car park on the western side of Doddridge Street, a part of the Sol Central development. The client, Great Portland Estates, commissioned the report from MOLAS. Following the recommendations of Myk Flitcroft of Northamptonshire Heritage, five evaluation pits were excavated on the northern side of the site. The entire site is also subject to a watching brief during the machine stripping. The results of the field evaluation have helped refine the initial assessment of the archaeological potential of the site. The presence of a post-medieval burial ground has been confirmed. In the light of revised understanding of the archaeological potential of the site the report concludes the impact of the proposed redevelopment may remove part of the upper layer of the cemetary deposit and of a limited number of burials. The proposed formation levels for the car park construction have now been revised and raised to minimise impact on the human remains.
