Description

{1} An archaeological watching brief commenced in February with the stripping of two areas in the centre of the site and an area to the north-west. Following the discovery of disarticulated human remains work was suspended on the 8th March. After the excavation of trial pits to determine the extent of the cemetery, the formation level of the new car park was raised above the level of the majority of the burials. The watching brief was resumed on the 15th April and the northern area was stripped to formation level. Burials that were above this level were lifted. Additional areas in the southern part of the site were stripped and archaeological features were recorded. A trench excavated for an interceptor tank, a gully trench and pit for CCTV camera were also monitored. [The report states this was St Mary's cemetery, although the burials are actually associated with the later Doddridge burial ground]
